The Arab Media Crisis

Written by Rami Al Sha’ir

I was present over the past few days in some gulf states, following a boisterous media landscape full of a momentum of news, analysis, and interventions that made me feel pity for the Arabic scenes for the extent of blunder in thoughts and impressions they cause.

That blunder isn’t only related to the analysis and points of views themselves, which are a right everyone has to practice with transparency and freedom, but specifically it’s about the news interpretations and the viewpoint the Arab media relies on, which is mainly the western media. In most international cases, the Arab media adapts the western view, especially when talking about its relation with Russia and Iran.

Despite the official position that rejects having any confrontation with Iran, with the latest news peddling that the KSA doesn’t allow the US to use its territory to attack Iran in case of a regional war, which is an honest and honorable attitude awaited from the Kingdom, the Arab media seems to operate under directions with no independence. Many powerful figures agreed with me upon this opinion, refusing to issue official statements or reveal their identities due to the sensitivity of the issue.

I say that some standards were imposed on the Arab media, some local and others international, necessitating them to disseminate the allegations of “the Russian army incurring losses” and “victory of the Ukrainian forces” with a clear and cheap lie denied by all the battlefield data. They are trying to show that the American aid of 61 billion dollars to Ukraine is a game-changer, but this is totally far from the truth.

The truth is that, from 60.7 billion dollars, the US will use about 23 billion dollars to renew its military holdings. Also, 14 billion dollars will be set aside for the Ukrainian security aid initiative, under which the Pentagon will buy new weapons for the Ukrainian army from US defense contractors (which means that money is also going to be paid in the US). There are also 11 million dollars for funding the American military operations in the region, empowering the Ukrainian army capabilities, and strengthening the intelligence cooperation between Kief and Washington. This is added to 8 billion dollars for non-military aid such as helping the Ukrainian government continue its main processes, including the payment of salaries and pensions.

Those aids and other European aid adopt the slogan of confronting the “Russian danger”, which will “pounce” on Europe if it wins the war against Ukraine. Therefore, the political elites in the US and Europe are deceiving their citizens with those illusions to push Ukraine to drain Russia until the last Ukrainian and to prevent the victory of Russia at all costs.

Regarding Iran, the media shows that the Iranian drones and missile attacks on Israel are nothing but a “charade” and “play” that Iran has agreed to with the US. This claim aims at convincing the Arabic follower that the US controls all of the world and the Middle East issues and that it’s fighting “shiite-iranian extremism and expansion” and “Russian expansion towards Europe.”

In the end, we have Arab-Iranian discord, Shiite-Sunni discord, Palestinian-Palestinian discord, and a smear campaign against Russia and Brics. This is added to the desperate attempts to stop the wheel of history, to hamper the world’s change from a major-power centrism to a world of multipolarity, and to maintain the economic and financial regime as it is at a time when the world’s economy is waiting for a grinding economic crisis.

Unfortunately, many are influenced by this media and tend towards accepting it; they strongly wonder when you discuss the issues with them or mention a different vision.

In general, I believe that this media mainly aims at keeping the Arabic audience away from the idea that the Arab world has any role or effect on the Palestinian issue, enhancement or settlement of relationships between the regional countries, or any role in the tremendous international changes taking place in the world today. Rather, you feel like the Arab media crafts making political, sectarian, and racial frictions and rivalries. It tries to grow hatred and despair from the Arabic reality and reach unconditional surrender to the “free” and “wonderful” “west” and “engine of development.”

Depriving the discussion of the Iranian files, the Russian-Ukrainian issue, NATO, tensions between Russia and America, or other issues from any percent of objectivity shows that journalists and different TV shows search for any pretext to deepen differences and sow animosities to increase their views, expand their spread area, and get more profits (from ads and such details), notwithstanding the standards, values, and ethics of the profession and humanity. In these scenes, no one seeks a solution, an action, or possible adaptations. Rather, they exchange accusations of cooperation with the enemy and treason without conscience.

They pay backhanded compliments at a time when neutrality ain’t right amidst the risks that our region is facing, and the fate that our Arabic-Palestinian nation is suffering from. Here, a man feels afraid of asking about who’s responsible for all of this or if this person or side follows certain propaganda.

Indeed, maybe what is really disheartening is the consensus of more than a few politicians and journalists, whom I met, on the confrontation “against Iran” and doubts “toward Turkey” and Russia. All of these points are in the interest of distinction and deepening the cracks between different orientations that should be working on uniting the Arabic role in confronting the Israeli-Zionist plan to liquidate the people of Palestine and their issue. So, is there any guide for the truth?
